Humankind could not abolish the “scourge of war”; Lincoln could not. But he would fight in the best tradition of humanity, struggle as counseled in the Western world by St. Augustine of Hippo in fourth-century North Africa, with mercy in his heart. He would carry the unbearable burden of war “with malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right.” And then redemption would come, “a lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.” But, as history tells us, we must continue to seek that redemption until the end of time.
